Granulate cutworm

The granulate cutworm (Feltia subterranea) is a member of the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known agricultural pest characterized by its nocturnal habits, which makes it particularly challenging to identify in fields before substantial damage has already occurred to the developing crops.

This species is a generalist feeder with a vast host range. It poses a severe threat to numerous economically important plants, including vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, and beans, as well as field crops like corn and cotton. The larvae are capable of causing damage to plants at various growth stages, often targeting seedlings and tender vegetation.

The biology of Feltia subterranea involves a complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae typically hide in the soil or under surface debris during daylight hours to avoid predation and heat. Their life cycle is influenced by environmental factors, with warmer climates often allowing for multiple generations per season.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which are known to cut off young plants at the soil level, earning them the name "cutworm." In addition to clipping stems, the larvae may feed on roots or tunnel into low-hanging fruits. This behavior leads to stand loss, reduced yield, and increased vulnerability to secondary infections in damaged plant tissues.

Effective control strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices, such as site sanitation, removal of alternative weed hosts, and tillage, are critical in reducing larval populations. When chemical intervention is necessary, insecticides should be applied in the evening when larvae are most active. Biological options, such as using beneficial nematodes or Bacillus thuringiensis, also provide viable alternatives.
