Description

Systematic position. The striped mealybug (Ferrisia malvastra) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Pseudococcidae. This small insect is commonly found in warm climates and greenhouses, posing a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural and ornamental plant species.

Host range. This species is a generalist feeder (polyphagous). It attacks numerous plants, including cotton, citrus, ornamental flowers (such as hibiscus and anthurium), and various vegetable crops. In greenhouse environments, the pest can spread rapidly by moving between different host plant species.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ferrisia malvastra is highly dependent on temperature. Females lay eggs within a white, waxy sac (ovisac) that provides protection for the offspring. Development stages include the egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, characterized by high humidity and heat, the pest can produce several generations per year, making management difficult.

Nature of damage and pest status. The insects feed by sucking cell sap from plant tissues, leading to chlorosis, leaf deformation, bud drop, and stunted growth.
