Description
Ficopomatus is a genus of tube-building polychaete worms belonging to the family Serpulidae, within the order Sabellida. The most notable species, Ficopomatus enigmaticus, is recognized as a significant invasive organism globally. While not a conventional agricultural pest, it is a major nuisance in aquatic environments, particularly in coastal aquaculture facilities.
This organism negatively impacts aquaculture by settling on farming infrastructure, shellfish cages, and water intake pipes. By forming dense, calcareous colonies, these worms physically impede water flow, reduce oxygenation within cages, and can cause significant economic losses by disrupting the growth and health of farmed species.
The biology of Ficopomatus revolves around the construction of hard, calcium-carbonate tubes. The life cycle includes a planktonic larval stage followed by settlement on hard substrates. Once attached, the worms grow rapidly, building interconnected tubes that form complex reef-like structures, which are extremely difficult to remove once fully established.
Damage is characterized by heavy biofouling, which increases the weight of submerged structures and leads to mechanical stress. Furthermore, the accumulation of waste and organic matter trapped within the colonies creates an anaerobic environment, negatively affecting the surrounding water quality and potentially inducing disease in farmed marine organisms.
Management strategies focus on physical and chemical control methods. Regular manual cleaning, pressure washing, and the application of anti-fouling coatings are essential for maintaining equipment. In large-scale operations, monitoring the settlement periods of larvae is crucial for optimizing the timing of maintenance activities and mitigating population outbreaks.
