Fieberiella florii is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a well-known pest in various horticultural environments, primarily recognized for its role as a vector for dangerous phytoplasma diseases that affect woody plants in temperate climates.
The host range of this insect includes various fruit-bearing and ornamental trees. Common victims include apple trees, pear trees, cherries, plums, and shrubs like privet. The insect tends to thrive in orchards where there is sufficient foliage and moisture, allowing it to complete its life cycle successfully.
The life cycle of this leafhopper typically consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited under the epidermis of the plant shoots. Nymphs emerge in the spring to begin feeding on the sap of the host plant, progressing through several instars before becoming adults in mid-summer.
Damage caused by Fieberiella florii is twofold. Direct feeding causes foliage yellowing and reduced vigor in young trees. However, its most severe impact is the transmission of phytoplasmas, which can cause devastating diseases such as apple proliferation, leading to stunted fruit growth and severe economic losses for growers.
Effective management strategies focus on monitoring the population using yellow sticky traps to determine the best time for intervention. Chemical control with appropriate systemic insecticides is often necessary during the nymphal stages. Additionally, horticultural hygiene, including pruning and the removal of severely infested material, helps to reduce the overwintering population.
