Description
Forda trivialis, commonly known as the cereal root aphid, belongs to the family Aphididae of the order Hemiptera. Unlike many other aphids that feed on foliage, this species is specialized in living underground, where it attacks the root systems of grasses and cereals.
The primary hosts for this pest include a wide range of cereal crops and wild grasses. By feeding on the phloem sap of the roots, the aphid directly compromises the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, which is particularly devastating during the early stages of plant development.
The biology of this species is characterized by subterranean lifestyle and often involves a symbiotic relationship with ants. The ants provide protection and assist in the dispersion of aphids among root systems. Reproduction is mostly parthenogenetic, allowing for rapid population growth during optimal soil moisture and temperature conditions.
The damage caused by Forda trivialis is primarily manifested as severe plant stunting, reduced tillering, and general chlorosis. Since the damage occurs beneath the surface, it is often misdiagnosed as nutrient deficiency or drought stress.
