Fredericella is a genus of freshwater bryozoans belonging to the family Fredericellidae. While these organisms are not direct plant pests that feed on crops, they are recognized as significant agents of biofouling in agricultural water management systems, posing serious operational challenges for irrigation infrastructure.

The biology of Fredericella is characterized by a colonial growth habit. They form branching, tube-like structures that attach firmly to surfaces within water systems. They reproduce both sexually and via statoblasts, which are highly resilient dormant buds capable of surviving desiccation and extreme temperature fluctuations, ensuring the species spreads throughout irrigation networks.

The economic harm caused by these bryozoans is primarily related to the physical obstruction of water transport systems. As colonies mature, they attach to the internal walls of pipelines, valves, pumps, and irrigation nozzles. This leads to increased friction, reduced flow rates, and eventual clogging, which disrupts the precise distribution of water to agricultural fields.

The infrastructure prone to Fredericella damage includes deep well pumps, main water supply lines, micro-irrigation emitters, and secondary filtration units. By accumulating significant biomass within the systems, these organisms increase operational costs by forcing more frequent maintenance, reducing pump efficiency, and necessitating the premature replacement of clogged parts.

Control and mitigation strategies are essential to maintain the functionality of irrigation systems and include:

• Installation of fine-mesh filtration at the water source to intercept statoblasts.
