Description

Systematic position: The Greek solifuge (Galeodes graecus) belongs to the order Solifugae, family Galeodidae. Often known as camel spiders or wind scorpions, these arachnids are frequently misidentified as agricultural pests due to their intimidating appearance and aggressive nocturnal behavior.

Biology and life cycle: Adapted to arid environments, these creatures lead a solitary and nocturnal lifestyle. Their life cycle consists of egg, nymphal stages, and adult phases. They are highly mobile hunters that use their strong chelicerae to grasp prey and excavate burrows in sandy or loose soil to escape extreme heat during the day.

Nature of damage: There is no agronomic evidence that the Greek solifuge causes damage to crops. They are obligate carnivores and do not feed on plant tissue. Reports of damage to roots, stems, or leaves attributed to them are scientifically inaccurate, as they lack the physiological structures to digest plant matter.

Economic importance: In agricultural ecosystems, the Greek solifuge is considered a beneficial organism rather than a pest. By predating on insects such as locusts, beetle larvae, and other soil-dwelling pests, they contribute to natural population control, acting as an ally to the farmer in managing insect infestations.

Control measures: Targeted control measures against the Greek solifuge are neither necessary nor recommended, as they do not threaten crop yield or quality. To ensure safety during field operations, the following precautions should be taken:

  • wear proper protective footwear and clothing while working in fields;
  • minimize debris and clutter in the fields that may serve as harborage areas for solifuges;
  • handle organic matter with care to avoid accidental contact with active individuals.
