Systematic position. The African grasshopper (Gastrimargus africanus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is a well-known agricultural pest distributed across various parts of Africa and parts of Asia, capable of causing severe damage to vegetation when population densities increase.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It is particularly damaging to major cereal crops such as millet, sorghum, maize, and rice. In addition to cultivated grains, it frequently infests pastures, sugarcane fields, and various leafy vegetable crops, causing significant yield losses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Gastrimargus africanus consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in soil batches known as egg pods. Nymphs undergo several developmental stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. The rate of development is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, with warmer temperatures and adequate humidity accelerating the reproductive cycle.

Damage patterns and impact. The pest uses its strong mandibles to consume plant material. Nymphs typically feed on leaf tissue, while adults can consume entire leaves, stems, and seed heads. Heavy infestations can lead to total crop failure, threatening food security in areas where these grasshoppers occur in high numbers due to their voracious appetite.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Gastrimargus africanus effectively:

• Early detection through regular field scouting and monitoring of breeding grounds.
• Chemical control using targeted insecticides during the early nymphal stages.
• Cultural practices like deep tilling of soil to destroy egg pods and expose them to environmental stress.
