Gecko

The genus Gekko belongs to the family Gekkonidae within the order Squamata. These lizards are characterized by their specialized toe pads, which allow for adhesion to various surfaces. It is essential for an agronomist to note that geckos are not considered plant pests, as they do not feed on plant tissues, such as leaves, roots, or fruits, and therefore do not cause direct crop loss.

Geckos primarily function as beneficial predators within agricultural settings, especially in greenhouses. Their diet consists almost exclusively of small insects, including various flies, beetles, and moth larvae that are common agricultural pests. By consuming these harmful insects, geckos provide a form of natural biological control, which can help reduce the overall pest pressure and the need for chemical interventions.

The biological cycle of geckos involves oviposition in sheltered environments, such as cracks in structural beams, agricultural debris, or soil cavities. The incubation period is strictly temperature-dependent. Once hatched, the juveniles are immediate predators, quickly adapting to their environment and continuously foraging for small invertebrates, which makes them effective allies in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.

Their potential for damage is extremely limited and largely accidental. In rare cases, high densities of these reptiles in a greenhouse might lead to minimal physical damage to delicate seedlings or aesthetic issues due to waste deposits on surfaces. However, these impacts are statistically insignificant when weighed against the benefits of their natural pest-control activities in an agro-ecosystem.

Control measures are rarely necessary, but if the presence of geckos needs to be restricted in specific facilities, the following practices are recommended:

• Sealing cracks and crevices in greenhouse frames.
• Installing screens on ventilation shafts to prevent entry.
• Managing or removing organic debris that serves as hiding spots.
• Maintaining dry, clean conditions to minimize nesting opportunities.
