Description

The water strider (Gerris) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Gerridae. These insects are biologically specialized for living on the surface film of freshwater habitats. They utilize long, hydrophobic legs to distribute their weight, allowing them to glide across water surfaces with remarkable speed and agility.

In an agricultural context, water striders are not considered crop pests because they do not feed on terrestrial plants or agricultural produce. Instead, they act as predators in aquatic ecosystems. Their presence is generally neutral for field farming, although they are significant members of the food chain in pond and wetland environments.
