Description
The European spruce sawfly (Gilpinia hercyniae) is an insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a major defoliator of spruce trees, primarily targeting various species of the genus Picea. Its ability to cause widespread defoliation makes it a significant concern for forestry and horticulture worldwide.
The host range is largely restricted to spruce species, with a particular preference for Norway spruce (Picea abies). In cases of severe infestation, the larvae consume both old and current-year needles, which puts significant physiological stress on the tree, potentially leading to reduced growth rates and increased susceptibility to other pathogens.
The life cycle of this species includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter within tough, cocoons in the soil or needle litter. Adults emerge in the spring to lay eggs inside slits cut into the needles. Depending on local climatic conditions, the insect can produce one or more generations per year, with larval activity peaking during the summer months.
Damage is characterized by visible needle loss starting from the interior of the crown and spreading outward. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the needles, while older larvae consume the entire needle down to the vascular tissue. High population densities can result in complete defoliation, which causes dieback and, in extreme cases, the mortality of entire forest stands.
