Gudgeon

The common gudgeon (Gobio gobio), belonging to the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae, is often categorized as a nuisance species or a pest in intensive aquaculture and pond management. While not a pest for terrestrial crops, it causes significant economic losses in commercial fish farming operations by competing for resources.

The primary damage caused by gudgeons involves competition for food and predation. As bottom-feeders, they consume a vast amount of benthic organisms, which are essential nutrients for high-value species like carp or tench. Furthermore, in spawning ponds, gudgeons are known to consume the eggs and fry of target fish, directly reducing the recruitment rate and overall productivity of the hatchery.

Regarding biology and life cycle, the common gudgeon is a small, gregarious fish that thrives in varied water conditions. It exhibits fractional spawning from spring to summer, allowing for rapid population growth. This reproductive strategy ensures that even a small number of gudgeons entering a pond can quickly dominate the environment, making them difficult to eradicate once established.

The economic harm is reflected in the stunted growth rates of the main fish stock. When the population density of gudgeons is high, the competition for proteins and invertebrates in the substrate leads to lower yields. This creates a challenging environment for farmers who must then compensate by increasing artificial feeding, which raises production costs and lowers profit margins.

Effective management and protection strategies are essential for maintaining healthy ponds. These include the rigorous installation of fine-mesh screens on inlet pipes to prevent eggs and larvae from entering the system. Additionally, periodic drainage and liming of pond bottoms during fallow periods are critical to eliminate remaining populations and break the life cycle of the gudgeon before the next stocking season begins.
