Chicken louse

The chicken louse, scientifically known as Goniocotes gallinae, is a species of parasitic insect belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. As an ectoparasite, it exclusively targets poultry, primarily chickens, feeding on dead skin cells, feathers, and skin debris. While not a plant pest, it is a significant agricultural concern for poultry farmers globally.

Morphologically, this louse is characterized by a flattened, yellowish-brown body that allows it to move rapidly between the barbs of feathers. It possesses specialized mouthparts adapted for chewing, which cause significant irritation to the host's skin. The parasite spends its entire life cycle on the host bird, making transmission between birds easy, especially in confined living conditions.

The life cycle of Goniocotes gallinae consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female attaches its eggs, commonly called nits, firmly to the bases of the feathers. These eggs hatch into nymphs, which look like smaller versions of the adults and progress through several molts before reaching maturity. Under favorable conditions, the life cycle is rapid, allowing for explosive population growth.

The economic impact of an infestation is manifested in decreased poultry performance. Heavy infestations cause intense itching and skin inflammation, leading to restlessness, feather pecking, reduced feed intake, and poor weight gain. In laying hens, this stress translates into a decline in egg production and lower overall health, making the flock more susceptible to other avian diseases.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach. This includes the application of approved insecticides through dust baths, sprays, or systemic treatments. Additionally, maintaining high standards of hygiene in coops, including regular deep cleaning and disinfection, is crucial to break the life cycle of the parasite and prevent re-infestation within the poultry house.
