Description

The Gortyna moth (Gortyna flavago), also known as the frosted orange moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as a significant stem-boring pest that causes damage to both wild and cultivated plant species by feeding on their internal tissues.

This pest has a wide host range, frequently infesting vegetable crops like potatoes and tomatoes, as well as various ornamental perennials. By drilling into the stems, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the plant, often leading to the wilting and eventual death of the affected stems.

The biological cycle of the Gortyna moth is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. The eggs are typically laid in late summer or autumn on the stems of host plants or debris. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, with larvae emerging in the spring to begin their feeding cycle.

Damage caused by this insect is characterized by the presence of entry holes in the stem and the accumulation of frass (larval excrement). As the larva feeds, the upper portion of the plant begins to wilt and turn yellow. Because the larva is protected inside the stem, standard contact insecticides are often ineffective once the infestation is established.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Sanitation is crucial: farmers should remove and destroy infested plant parts and clear weeds that serve as alternate hosts. Periodic scouting during the spring allows for timely intervention with systemic insecticides applied when the young larvae are still exposed on the plant surface before boring into the stem.
