Blue-green sharpshooter

Graphocephala atropunctata

Description

The Graphocephala atropunctata, commonly known as the blue-green sharpshooter, is an insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This species is primarily recognized for its role in damaging viticulture and its ability to act as a significant vector for various plant pathogens.

These pests primarily target grapevines, although they are known to feed on a wide variety of ornamental plants, shrubs, and native trees. Because they are highly mobile, they can quickly infest large areas of commercial vineyards, making management a critical part of agricultural maintenance in affected regions.

The life cycle of this sharpshooter typically involves several generations per year. Females deposit eggs into the leaf petioles or soft stems of the host plant. After hatching, the nymphs go through several developmental stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. Both nymphs and adults feed by sucking phloem sap from the plant's vascular tissue.

The damage caused by Graphocephala atropunctata is twofold. Direct feeding causes foliage chlorosis and can stunt plant growth. More critically, the insect is a known carrier of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which is the pathogen responsible for Pierce's disease in grapevines, a condition that blocks the plant's water-conducting vessels and eventually kills the vine.

Effective management strategies should include the following approaches:

  • Monitoring adult populations with yellow sticky cards.
  • Removing weeds and host plants surrounding the vineyard to disrupt the life cycle.
  • Applying systemic insecticides specifically during the peak nymph emergence periods.
  • Implementing biological controls where suitable and maintaining vineyard health to minimize susceptibility.
