Red-banded leafhopper

The Graphocephala coccinea, commonly referred to as the red-banded leafhopper, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Native to North America, this insect has become a notable pest in ornamental horticulture, where it exploits various woody plants to satisfy its nutritional needs.

This pest targets a wide variety of hosts, particularly favoring rhododendrons, conifers, and various deciduous shrubs. By piercing the plant tissue with its specialized mouthparts, the leafhopper sucks the xylem and phloem sap, leading to nutrient depletion, chlorosis, and stunted growth of the host plant.

The biology of this species is characterized by an egg-overwintering stage. Females insert their eggs into the bud scales of the host plants during the late summer and autumn. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs undergo several molts before transitioning into winged adults, which are capable of spreading the infestation to neighboring plants.

The damage caused by these insects is two-fold. Firstly, direct feeding causes significant stress to the plant. Secondly, the production of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaves, hinders photosynthesis, and diminishes the ornamental value of the plant significantly.

• Pruning and destruction of infested plant parts.
• Promoting natural predators like lacewings and ladybugs.

Effective management strategy requires timing applications to coincide with the hatching of nymphs. Because the eggs are protected within the plant tissues, insecticide applications are most effective when the young nymphs begin to feed actively. Maintaining overall plant vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization helps the plants withstand the stress of minor infestations.
