Description

The rhododendron leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi) is a species of insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Originally native to North America, it is now widely established across Europe, where it poses a significant threat to ornamental rhododendron shrubs.

This pest exclusively feeds on the sap of rhododendrons. Both the nymphs and the adults congregate on the undersides of leaves and on developing flower buds to pierce the plant tissues and ingest the nutrient-rich fluids, which can weaken the vigor of the plant over time.

The life cycle of this leafhopper consists of a single generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited beneath the protective scales of the flower buds. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and progress through several instars before reaching the adult stage.

While the direct feeding damage causes minor leaf mottling, the secondary damage is far more severe. The insect acts as a vector for the fungus Seifertia azaleae. This fungus infects the flower buds through the puncture wounds, causing them to turn black and die before they can bloom, leading to significant loss of ornamental value.

Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management. Key strategies include:

  • Regular inspection of buds in early spring.
  • Physical removal and destruction of infested buds.
  • Monitoring adult populations using yellow sticky traps.
  • Application of systemic insecticides when nymphs are actively feeding.
