Common crane

The common crane (Grus grus), belonging to the order Gruiformes and family Gruidae, is a majestic bird that can occasionally act as a nuisance in agricultural environments. During seasonal migrations, large flocks often frequent farmlands, turning them into feeding grounds which can cause significant economic concerns for farmers.

The birds primarily damage agricultural crops such as winter cereals, spring wheat, barley, and maize. They are particularly attracted to fields during the sowing season when seeds are easily accessible, and in the early growth stages when seedlings are soft and nutrient-rich. In addition to cereals, they may feed on peas, sunflowers, and other oilseed crops.

Biologically, common cranes are highly social birds that exhibit strong flocking behavior. Their life cycle includes long-distance migration, during which they rely on agricultural landscapes for essential stopovers. This behavior leads to localized concentrations of cranes on arable land, where their feeding patterns can deplete crops over large areas in a very short time.

The damage caused is twofold: direct consumption of seeds and the physical destruction of seedlings through trampling. This leads to gaps in plant stands, which reduces yield potential and uniformity. Furthermore, the compaction caused by the birds walking across fields can negatively influence soil structure, particularly in fields with heavy clay content during wet periods.

To mitigate the impact of cranes on crops, growers employ various deterrent strategies to minimize losses:

• Installation of acoustic deterrents, including gas cannons and bio-acoustic alarm call systems.
• Deployment of visual scarecrows, raptor silhouettes, and motion-activated lights.
• Field monitoring and patrolling, particularly during the vulnerable germination phase.
• Use of non-toxic deterrent substances for seed treatment, where permitted by local regulations.
• Creation of sacrificial feeding zones situated away from critical production areas.
