Description
Gymnosoma is a genus of parasitic flies belonging to the family Tachinidae and the order Diptera. While often misidentified in agricultural contexts, these flies are not crop pests but rather specialized natural enemies that prey on various species of true bugs (Hemiptera), including notorious agricultural pests like shield bugs.
The biology of Gymnosoma is characterized by an obligate parasitic relationship with their hosts. Adult flies are active, nectar-feeding insects that seek out bugs. The female fly deposits eggs directly onto the exoskeleton of the host. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the body of the bug, feeding on its internal tissues until the host dies and the larva pupates.
Because they do not feed on plant tissues, they cause zero damage to crops.
