Like other members of the subfamily Gyponinae, they possess a distinct head structure and specific coloration that provides effective camouflage within the foliage of host plants.

This pest affects a wide range of cultivated and wild plants. Gyponana expanda typically causes significant damage to fruit trees such as apples and pears, berry bushes, and certain vegetable crops. By feeding on leaves and young shoots, the insect causes the plant to weaken, leading to a decrease in overall yield and vitality.

Leaves affected by these leafhoppers turn yellow, curl up, and drop prematurely, which disrupts the photosynthetic process. Furthermore, like many other cicadellids, Gyponana expanda serves as a potential vector for phytoplasma and viral diseases, which can result in crop failure or severe fruit deformation.
