Description

Systematic position: The genus Gyranusoidea belongs to the order Hymenoptera, within the family Encyrtidae. These insects are recognized primarily as parasitoids. They play a critical role in agricultural ecosystems by regulating populations of various species of mealybugs (Pseudococcidae), which are notorious pests of woody plants and crops.

Affected crops: They are most commonly associated with citrus groves, mango orchards, and tropical fruit trees. They are also found on ornamental plants in greenhouses. The damage to these crops is generally caused by the mealybugs themselves, which the Gyranusoidea species target for their reproduction and larval development.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typically holometabolous, characterized by internal parasitism. Adult females search for suitable mealybug hosts, injecting eggs into them. The larvae then consume the internal tissues of the host. After completing larval development, the parasitoid pupates inside or near the remains of the host, emerging as an adult.
