In its natural environment, the parasite resides on the skin and fins of the fish. As an highly aggressive species, it causes a severe disease known as gyrodactylosis. In intensive aquaculture and fish farming settings, outbreaks of this parasite can lead to devastating losses, as the parasite reproduces rapidly and can quickly infect entire populations within enclosed water systems.

The biology of the parasite is distinguished by its unique reproductive strategy known as viviparity. Within the mother organism, a daughter embryo develops, which in turn already contains the next generation. This "matryoshka-style" system of reproduction allows the colony size on the host's body to grow exponentially within a few days, especially when water temperatures are favorable.

The damage caused by the parasite manifests through the destruction of the fish's epidermis. The parasite attaches itself to the host using a powerful posterior attachment disk equipped with hooks, which causes micro-trauma, tissue necrosis, and the development of secondary bacterial or fungal infections. Heavily infested fish become lethargic, lose their appetite, and develop characteristic grey patches of damaged skin.

Protection and control measures rely on strict adherence to veterinary and sanitary regulations during fish transport. The primary methods for managing the infestation include:
