Alfalfa seed chalcid

Habrocytus medicaginis

Description

The Alfalfa seed chalcid (Habrocytus medicaginis) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the Pteromalidae family. It is a highly specialized pest that targets alfalfa (lucerne) seed crops, representing a significant challenge for seed producers worldwide.

This wasp primarily infests the seeds of the alfalfa plant. The larvae are endoparasites, completing their development within the developing seed, which makes detection extremely difficult until the damage has already occurred.

The life cycle typically involves the larvae overwintering within the infested seeds that remain on the ground after harvest or are stored in silos. Adult wasps emerge in the spring, coinciding with the flowering and pod formation stages of the alfalfa host plant.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe: they consume the entire contents of the seed, leaving behind a hollowed-out husk. As a result, the commercial value and germination potential of the harvested seed lot are drastically reduced.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Habrocytus medicaginis. Key strategies include:

  • rigorous field sanitation to remove infested debris;
  • crop rotation practices;
  • careful timing of insecticide applications during the adult emergence phase;
  • thorough cleaning and processing of harvested seeds to destroy dormant larvae.
