The Buffalo fly (Haematobia minuta) is a significant blood-feeding ectoparasite belonging to the order Diptera and the family Muscidae. This fly is a persistent pest of cattle and other ruminants, relying entirely on the blood of its host to survive and complete its reproductive cycle.

While this insect does not feed on vegetation, it is considered a major agricultural pest due to its devastating impact on livestock health and production efficiency. Infestations lead to severe economic losses for farmers, primarily through reduced weight gain in meat cattle and decreased milk production in dairy herds.

The biological development of the fly is closely tied to the presence of fresh cattle dung. Females lay their eggs in the manure shortly after excretion. Larvae develop rapidly within the dung pats, feeding on organic matter, before pupating in the soil. This rapid life cycle allows for massive population spikes in hot and humid weather.

The damage caused by these flies is primarily mechanical and behavioral. Constant biting causes painful lesions on the skin, often around the shoulders and neck. This stress leads to cattle spending time rubbing against objects to alleviate itching instead of grazing, which significantly lowers overall herd productivity and health.
