Haematoloma
Haematoloma
Description
Haematoloma is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cercopidae, within the order Hemiptera. Commonly recognized as part of the spittlebug group, these insects are specialized sap-sucking pests capable of causing significant damage to both ornamental and agricultural plant species across various regions.
The primary food source for both nymphs and adults includes a range of botanical families, notably Asteraceae and Poaceae. They pose a significant threat to plants during active growth phases, as they extract essential cell sap from young shoots and leaves, which leads to stunted development and overall vitality loss in the host plant.
The life cycle of the insect proceeds through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs are particularly noted for producing a frothy substance that provides a protective microenvironment, preventing desiccation and deterring predators. Depending on climatic conditions, the pest may produce one or two generations per season, typically overwintering as eggs within plant tissues or under leaf litter.
Symptoms of infestation typically manifest as curling, deformity of leaves, and yellowing (chlorosis). Because the feeding disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, the result is often reduced yield, inferior crop quality, and an unsightly appearance. Furthermore, these insects are considered potential vectors for various plant viruses, adding a secondary layer of risk to crop health.
Effective control strategies rely on population monitoring and an integrated management approach:
- Implementation of crop rotation and consistent weed management during off-seasons.
- Application of systemic insecticides upon reaching economic damage thresholds.
- Targeted preventive treatments during peak nymph emergence periods.
- Application of optimal agronomic practices to enhance plant resistance and vigor.
