Haliclystus is a genus of stalked jellyfish belonging to the order Stauromedusae and the family Lucernariidae. Unlike free-swimming jellyfish, these organisms spend their adult lives attached to hard substrates, such as rocks, seaweed, or human-made structures. In the aquaculture industry, they are recognized as biofouling agents that can negatively affect operational efficiency.

The systematic classification places these organisms in the class Staurozoa. They possess a goblet-shaped body with eight distinct lobes, each featuring clusters of tentacles used for capturing prey. Their ability to thrive in coastal environments makes them a common component of biofouling communities that colonize marine farms and coastal infrastructure.

The biological life cycle of Haliclystus involves a sessile polyp stage and non-ciliated larvae that crawl along surfaces until they find a suitable spot to attach. Their propagation is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly water temperature and nutrient concentrations, which can trigger population explosions during specific seasons.

The economic harm caused by these organisms is primarily related to biofouling. When colonies of Haliclystus cover nets, pipes, or shellfish cages, they obstruct water flow, compete for food sources with cultured organisms, and increase the weight and drag on floating aquaculture infrastructure, potentially causing structural damage during adverse weather.

Managing populations of this marine pest requires proactive measures to ensure the health and productivity of the aquaculture site. Effective strategies include:
