Description
The Halticus bractatus, commonly known as the garden fleahopper, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. Despite its small size, it is recognized as a persistent pest in various horticultural and field crop environments.
This pest has an extensive host range, frequently attacking legumes, cucurbits, solanaceous crops, and numerous ornamental species. It thrives in diverse environments, often moving from weedy borders into crop fields as the season progresses and vegetation dries out.
The biology of the garden fleahopper is characterized by rapid development through several nymphal stages. In warmer climates, the species can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, allowing its population to explode if left unmonitored during the peak summer months.
The damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the underside of leaves. This feeding results in the characteristic stippling or spotting appearance, as the plant cells collapse and lose their chlorophyll, ultimately reducing the overall vigor and yield of the affected plants.
Integrated management practices include the following:
- Sanitation, particularly the removal of host weeds surrounding the crop area.
- Monitoring plant foliage regularly for signs of stippling and the presence of small, dark, jumping insects.
