Mirid bug Halticus luteicollis

Halticus luteicollis is a small species of plant bug belonging to the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. Known for its jumping behavior and agility, this pest can cause significant physiological damage to various cultivated plants, often escaping early detection due to its small size and cryptic coloration.

The host range of this insect includes a variety of economically important plants, particularly within the Solanaceae family. Potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants are among the most frequently attacked crops. It can also thrive on various weeds, making the sanitation of field borders essential for preventing colonization.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern, involving egg, nymph, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing plant tissues with their proboscis and sucking out the cell contents. The rate of development is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in warmer climates during a single growing season.

The damage is primarily characterized by chlorotic spotting on leaves, resulting from the destruction of mesophyll cells at the feeding site. These spots often coalesce, leading to severe yellowing, tissue necrosis, and in extreme cases, total defoliation of the affected plant, which drastically reduces photosynthetic capacity.
