Systematic position
The flea-hopper (Halticus tibialis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). Although commonly called a flea-hopper due to its jumping ability and size, it is biologically distinct from traditional flea beetles, which belong to the order Coleoptera.

Host crops and impact
This pest poses a threat to a variety of vegetable crops, particularly solanaceous species like tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes, as well as several species of legumes. By piercing plant tissues and feeding on cell sap, the insects cause significant physiological stress, often resulting in reduced yields and stunted plant development.

Biology and lifecycle
The lifecycle of Halticus tibialis consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults are active feeders. They typically overwinter as adults in plant debris, weeds, or sheltered soil areas. When temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to infest young seedlings, quickly multiplying if environmental conditions are favorable.

Nature of damage
The presence of the flea-hopper is initially indicated by tiny chlorotic spots on the foliage, which are actually feeding sites. As the population increases, these spots merge, causing the leaves to yellow, wither, and eventually die. This damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which is detrimental to the development of fruits and pods.
