The saddle gall midge (Haplodiplosis marginata) is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized insect that targets various cereal crops, posing a significant risk to grain production in many regions.
The primary hosts of this pest include winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and several wild grasses. The economic impact is particularly severe in seasons with high moisture levels, which favor both the development of the larvae and the emergence of adult midges from the soil.
The life cycle of the saddle gall midge is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The larvae spend the winter buried in the soil at depths of up to 15 cm. During spring, when conditions become optimal, they pupate and emerge as adults to lay eggs on the leaves and stems of young cereal plants.
The damage caused is characterized by the formation of characteristic saddle-shaped galls on the stems and leaf sheaths. These galls disrupt the flow of nutrients within the plant, leading to stunted growth, stem breakage, reduced ear size, and significant grain weight loss, which directly correlates to decreased yields.
Control measures primarily involve agronomic practices such as deep autumn plowing to bury the larvae and implementing crop rotation to break the pest cycle. In cases of high infestation, insecticide applications synchronized with the egg-laying period are necessary to effectively protect the crop from damage.
