Description

Hauptidia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small leafhoppers, notably Hauptidia maroccana, are recognized as significant pests in viticulture and various horticultural crops, impacting both yield and plant vitality through their feeding behavior.

The primary host for this pest is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The insects prefer the underside of the leaves, where they puncture the epidermis to feed on sap. While grapevines are the most economically significant victims, the pest can also inhabit a variety of ornamental plants and garden weeds, serving as a bridge between seasons.

The biological cycle of Hauptidia includes the egg, nymph, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as adults in protected environments, such as leaf litter, pruning debris, or bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and reproduce, completing multiple generations in a single growing season.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by stippling or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface, often referred to as a "mottled" appearance. This damage disrupts chlorophyll production, thereby reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the vine. In severe infestations, leaves can become necrotic, leading to early senescence and reduced fruit quality.
