Greenhouse leafhopper

The greenhouse leafhopper (Hauptidia maroccana) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It has established itself as a significant pest, particularly in greenhouse environments and protected cultivation systems, where the controlled climate provides ideal conditions for year-round reproduction.

This species is a highly polyphagous pest with a preference for various vegetable crops. Major hosts include plants from the Solanaceae family (such as tomatoes and eggplant) and Brassicaceae, as well as several ornamental species. Its ability to quickly colonize new areas makes it a constant threat to commercial horticulture.

The life cycle of the pest consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Both nymphs and adults inhabit the underside of the leaves, where they feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking out the sap. The rapid life cycle allows for multiple overlapping generations within a single season, leading to sudden population explosions.

The damage caused by Hauptidia maroccana is primarily nutritional. As they feed, they remove plant fluids and inject saliva, which often leads to the appearance of characteristic stippling or chlorotic spots on the foliage. In severe infestations, the leaves become bleached, dry out, and drop prematurely, resulting in reduced vegetative growth and significant crop losses.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

• Regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps to detect initial colonization.
• Strict hygiene measures, including the removal of weeds and crop residues that harbor overwintering populations.
• Introduction of natural predators or parasitoids as part of a biological control program.
• Application of targeted insecticides that are safe for beneficial insects if threshold levels are exceeded.
• Screening greenhouse vents with fine-mesh netting to prevent the entry of adult leafhoppers.
