Weevil

The weevil (lat. Haustellum) refers to a diverse group of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are distinguished by their characteristic elongated snout or rostrum, which they use to bore into plant tissues. This evolutionary adaptation allows them to reach inner plant structures, making them highly specialized and persistent agricultural pests.

Weevils pose a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural commodities, including cereals, pulses, fruit trees, and stored grains. By targeting the reproductive organs of plants, such as buds, fruits, and seeds, they directly affect yield quantity and market quality. Adults often leave small, distinct holes in the foliage, while larvae consume the interior of seeds, rendering them hollow and worthless. High infestation rates can lead to severe crop losses, often necessitating immediate control intervention.
