The Chenopodium aphid (Hayhurstia atriplicis) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets plants belonging to the Amaranthaceae family, with a particular affinity for Chenopodium species and commercial beet crops.

This pest is a significant threat to various beet varieties, including sugar, fodder, and garden beets. By piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, the aphids drain the plant of essential nutrients, leading to physiological stress, stunted growth, and a marked reduction in overall plant vigor.

The life cycle of Hayhurstia atriplicis is typical for the family. It overwinters in the egg stage, primarily on host weeds. Upon hatching in spring, the aphids initiate several generations of rapid reproduction.
