Description
Systematic position: Spiral nematodes of the genus Helicotylenchus belong to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Hoplolaimidae. These microscopic plant-parasitic worms are widely distributed across the globe, inhabiting both agricultural soils and greenhouse environments, where they act as significant soil-borne pests.
Crops affected: These nematodes are polyphagous organisms. They attack a vast range of plants, including vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers), fruit crops (strawberries, grapes), ornamental flowers, turfgrasses, and various tree species. Their ability to survive on a wide range of hosts makes them a difficult challenge for growers.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Helicotylenchus consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. They are typically migratory semi-endoparasites or ectoparasites. They feed on root cells by puncturing them with their stylet and injecting digestive enzymes. Under favorable soil temperature and moisture conditions, they can complete their life cycle in just a few weeks.
Nature of damage and pathogenicity: Feeding by these nematodes causes necrotic lesions on the root surface. This destruction of the root cortex prevents proper water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunting, chlorosis, and general plant decline. High populations in the rhizosphere can cause severe yield losses and make the plant more susceptible to other soil pathogens like fungi and bacteria.
Control measures: Managing Helicotylenchus requires a multi-faceted approach:
- Ensuring the use of certified, nematode-free planting material.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the population.
- Using soil solarization or steam sterilization in greenhouse setups.
- Applying biological control agents like parasitic fungi or specific nematicides if economic thresholds are exceeded.
