The South American bollworm (Helicoverpa gelotopoeon) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a significant agricultural pest primarily found in South America, where it poses a recurring threat to industrial crops such as soybeans and cotton.

This insect is known for its polyphagous nature, meaning it can feed on a wide range of host plants. While soybeans are its primary target, it also infests sunflower, alfalfa, flax, and various weed species, which often serve as an alternative food source and a bridge for population development between cropping seasons.
