Native budworm

The Native budworm (Helicoverpa punctigera) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. Native to Australia, this species is highly notorious for its ability to migrate across the continent and infest a diverse array of agricultural and horticultural crops, posing a consistent threat to national food security and farm profitability.

This pest exhibits a broad host range, feeding on hundreds of different plant species. Economically significant crops that are most frequently targeted include cotton, chickpeas, lentils, sunflowers, canola, and various pulse crops. The moth's ability to switch between hosts allows it to maintain high population levels throughout the growing season in various regions.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the foliage or reproductive parts of the host plant. The larvae (caterpillars) go through several instars, with later stages being particularly damaging. The pupal stage occurs in the soil, which provides a level of protection against environmental fluctuations and some surface-applied control measures.

Damage caused by the native budworm is primarily focused on the reproductive structures of the plant. Caterpillars bore into flower buds, pods, and developing fruit, rendering them unfit for market. This feeding behavior not only results in direct yield loss but also creates entry points for secondary infections by fungi and bacteria, further compounding the degradation of crop quality.

Management strategies require a multifaceted approach:

• regular scouting and monitoring using pheromone traps to time interventions correctly;
• the use of nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) sprays specifically targeting larvae;
• application of insecticides at critical growth stages when larvae are in early instars;
• encouraging natural enemies such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles;
• maintaining good field hygiene to reduce carry-over populations between seasons.
