Bohemian mealybug

The Bohemian mealybug (Heliococcus bohemicus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is recognized as a major threat to viticulture, capable of causing substantial economic damage if not managed correctly through integrated pest management programs.

This pest primarily infests grapevines, although it has a polyphagous nature. It can be found on various deciduous trees and shrubs, such as maple, linden, and hazelnut. Its ability to survive on alternative hosts makes it difficult to eradicate completely from surrounding landscapes near vineyards.

The biological cycle of this insect typically consists of one generation per year. The overwintering stage involves nymphs (larvae) hiding in bark crevices or under loose wood layers on the vine trunk. In spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge, migrate to young shoots, and begin feeding on plant sap by piercing the epidermal tissues.

Damage caused by the Bohemian mealybug includes the depletion of vital nutrients from the vine, leading to stunted shoot growth and reduced cluster formation. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaves and fruit, interfering with the photosynthetic process and reducing the overall quality and marketability of the grapes.

Control strategies involve a combination of mechanical and chemical approaches. Essential practices include:

• Removing and burning old, loose bark from trunks during winter dormancy.
• Applying dormant oil sprays to target overwintering nymphs.
• Using systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of the crawler stage.
• Monitoring population density using pheromone traps to time treatments accurately.

Effective management also requires careful scouting of the vineyard to identify initial infestations. Controlling weeds and alternate host plants in the immediate vicinity is also recommended to prevent re-infestation of the grapevines throughout the growing season.
