Description
Heliothis fletcheri is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is primarily recognized for its destructive impact on cotton production, acting as a major threat to yield stability in specific geographical zones where the host plant is grown.
The host range is predominantly focused on cotton plants. The larvae, or caterpillars, exhibit a preference for the reproductive structures of the plant, including floral buds (squares) and developing bolls. Feeding on these parts causes premature shedding and prevents the development of high-quality fiber.
The life cycle of this species includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths are nocturnally active and lay eggs on the preferred host parts. The larvae undergo several molts, and their development rate is significantly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity conditions in the cotton field.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by circular holes bored into the bolls. This physical damage is often compounded by the entry of fungi and bacteria, leading to internal rot of the boll contents. Consequently, the quality of the harvest is severely compromised, often leading to total loss of affected bolls.
