Taxonomic position: The spotted clover moth (Heliothis scutosa) is a member of the Noctuidae family, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a polyphagous pest with a vast geographical distribution, capable of causing significant damage to various crops in different environmental conditions.

Host crops: This pest shows a wide range of host preference, feeding on both wild plants and cultivated crops. Key agricultural hosts include alfalfa (lucerne), sunflowers, corn, chickpeas, and various industrial crops. Due to its migratory nature and adaptability, it can quickly infest large field areas during peak flight periods.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as a pupa within the soil, typically at depths of 10–15 centimeters. Adult moths emerge in spring when temperatures are optimal. Females lay eggs on foliage or floral parts. The larval stage lasts for several weeks, depending on the ambient temperature, after which the caterpillars pupate in the soil to continue the next cycle.

Damage and pest status: Larvae cause the most damage by feeding on leaves and, more importantly, on reproductive organs such as flower buds and developing seeds. This direct attack on yield-forming parts significantly reduces production. In severe infestations, the caterpillar can cause almost total loss of the floral heads in sunflower and alfalfa crops.

Protection measures: Effective control relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Deep plowing (tillage) in autumn is crucial as it disrupts the pupae in the soil. During the growing season, field scouting is essential to identify the start of larval hatching. Chemical control involves the application of selective insecticides when the threshold levels of larvae are exceeded.
