Dwarf mongoose

Taxonomic position. The dwarf mongoose (Helogale) belongs to the order Carnivora and the family Herpestidae. While these animals are generally considered wild, in certain agricultural environments, their habit of intense burrowing and foraging leads to classification as a minor pest that disrupts agricultural land and crop development.

Crops damaged. This species poses a threat primarily to vegetable, grain, and melon crops. The most significant damage occurs when fields are situated near the natural habitats of mongoose colonies, leading to the destruction of root structures and the disruption of small-scale agricultural irrigation systems.

Biology and life cycle. Dwarf mongooses are social animals living in complex underground burrows. They exhibit a high reproductive rate, which allows them to adapt quickly to new habitats, especially if the agricultural area provides additional food sources. Their activity peaks during the growing season, coinciding with the most vulnerable stages of crop maturation.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The damage is mainly physical. By digging tunnels in search of insects or fruits, they undermine the root systems of crops, causing them to wilt or die. In addition to direct plant damage, their burrowing activities interfere with soil moisture retention, indirectly reducing yield efficiency and overall field health.

Control measures. Mitigation requires a combination of physical and deterrent strategies to manage population impact without violating environmental regulations. Key measures include:

• Installing subterranean fencing to prevent tunneling into fields.
• Using olfactory or sonic repellents to deter mongooses from established colonies.
• Maintaining clear field boundaries by removing debris that provides shelter for burrowing.
• Implementing non-lethal trapping and relocation programs for problematic colonies.
