Cashew mosquito bug

Helopeltis anacardii, commonly known as the cashew mosquito bug, belongs to the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as one of the most serious agricultural pests affecting cashew nut production, particularly in the tropical regions of the African continent where the plant is a critical economic resource.

The primary host plant for this species is the cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale). The insect preferentially feeds on the most vulnerable parts of the tree, including tender shoots, floral panicles, and developing nuts. Because these tissues are vital for fruit production, the damage caused by the mosquito bug directly impacts the final harvest yield, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.

The biology of Helopeltis anacardii is characterized by a rapid development cycle. Females typically lay eggs within the soft tissues of the plant. After hatching, the nymphs go through several molting stages, feeding continuously throughout the process. The species thrives in humid environments, which often coincide with the peak flowering period of cashew trees, allowing for rapid population explosions.

The damage caused by these insects is distinct and often referred to as "die-back." When the bug pierces the plant tissue to feed, it secretes toxic saliva that destroys the local cells. This results in the formation of dark, sunken necrotic lesions on the surface of the plant. Over time, these lesions can girdle shoots and cause flower buds to drop, severely compromising the tree's health.
