Often referred to as mirid bugs, these insects are significant pests in tropical agricultural systems, particularly in African cocoa-producing regions, where they cause substantial economic damage.

This pest primarily targets cocoa trees, but it is also known to infest tea plantations, cotton, and various other tropical plants. Both adults and nymphs feed on the plant sap, utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to damage the young shoots, flowers, and developing pods, which are the most susceptible parts of the host plant.

The biology of the species is characterized by a rapid life cycle, which is heavily influenced by high humidity and moderate temperatures. Eggs are inserted into the soft tissue of the plant. After hatching, the nymphs undergo several instars, feeding aggressively throughout their development. Their ability to reproduce quickly allows for rapid population explosions within a single growing season.

The damage caused by Helopeltis bergrothi is highly distinctive. When feeding, the insect injects saliva containing toxins that cause localized cell death, leading to necrotic spots, stem cankers, and deformation of the cocoa pods. This damage not only stunts plant growth but also makes the plant vulnerable to secondary infections by various fungal pathogens.
