Tea mosquito bug

Systematic position. Helopeltis bradyi is classified under the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. Known colloquially as the tea mosquito bug, this insect is one of the most destructive pests in tropical agricultural landscapes, specifically affecting high-value beverage crops.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). However, it is also documented on cocoa, cinchona, and various wild host plants. Its ability to infest a wide range of plants allows it to survive throughout the year in warm, humid regions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the tissues of tender shoots and leaf stalks. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and relative humidity, typically completing a generation within a few weeks.

Nature of damage. Adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissue and injecting saliva containing digestive enzymes. This feeding behavior causes necrotic lesions, which appear as dark spots on leaves and stems. As the tissue dies and shrivels, the affected leaves become deformed, leading to reduced photosynthesis and crop yield loss.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Frequent plucking of tea leaves to remove eggs and nymphs.
• Pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
• Application of chemical insecticides targeted at specific growth stages.
• Preservation of natural predators, such as ants and predatory bugs, to maintain ecological balance.
