Description
The Sumatran tea mosquito bug (Helopeltis sumatranus) is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest affecting tropical agricultural systems, with a primary focus on cocoa (Theobroma cacao) plantations and related woody crops.
These insects cause direct damage by feeding on the sap of young tissues. During the feeding process, they inject toxic saliva into the plant, which results in localized cell death. This leads to the characteristic lesions seen on leaves, stems, and developing pods, effectively hindering the physiological development of the plant.
The life cycle consists of egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Eggs are inserted into the soft tissue of stalks or petioles, making them difficult to detect. Development is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature, with optimal conditions leading to rapid population surges that can devastate crop yields in a short period.
The damage caused by Helopeltis sumatranus is manifested as dark, necrotic spots that eventually turn into scabs or cracks. In cases of high infestation, the terminal shoots may wither or die, and cocoa pods often display malformations, significantly reducing the market value and yield of the harvest.
