Description

The Tea mosquito bug (Helopeltis theivora) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests affecting tea plantations, primarily in South and Southeast Asia, capable of causing significant economic losses to the tea industry.

The primary host plant is the tea bush (Camellia sinensis), but the pest is polyphagous. It also infests a variety of other crops, including cocoa, cinchona, and several fruit trees, as well as various wild plants that serve as reservoirs for the population during off-seasons.

The lifecycle of the insect involves egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs within the soft plant tissues, such as young stems or leaf petioles. The developmental rate is highly sensitive to environmental factors like temperature and humidity, which often lead to overlapping generations throughout the year.

The damage is caused by the feeding behavior of nymphs and adults. As they pierce the plant tissue, they inject toxic saliva, resulting in necrotic spots. These lesions lead to the curling and drying of young leaves and shoots, which severely impairs the vegetative growth and reduces the quality of the harvested tea leaves.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain the health of the plantation. Key strategies include:

  • Pruning of infested shoots to remove eggs and nymphs
  • Enhancing the activity of natural predators and parasitoids
  • Implementing regular monitoring and scouting for early detection
  • Targeted application of insecticides only when necessary, favoring bio-pesticides
