Hemadas

Systematic position: Hemadas is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Pteromalidae. They are known as gall-inducing wasps, specifically recognized for their unique interaction with host plants, where they induce the formation of galls to serve as a shelter and food source for their larvae.

Host plants: The primary targets for Hemadas species, particularly Hemadas nubilipennis, are plants within the Vaccinium genus. Blueberries, including highbush blueberry varieties, are the most susceptible crops, often suffering from stunted growth due to the presence of these insects on their young stems.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is intricately synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Females oviposit into the actively growing terminal tissues of stems. The larvae release specific secretions that trigger the plant to produce a woody, multi-chambered gall. The larvae develop entirely inside these structures, feeding on the specialized tissue until they reach the adult stage.

Damage and impact: The presence of Hemadas is characterized by distinctive, kidney-shaped or irregular galls formed on the tips of branches. These galls disrupt the nutrient flow to the apical meristem, effectively stopping shoot elongation. Heavy infestations lead to reduced plant vigor, deformed canopy structures, and a measurable decrease in berry yield.

Protection measures: Effective management strategies include the following steps:

• Routine scouting of plantations to detect early signs of gall formation.
• Physical removal of galls by pruning affected shoots before the adult wasps emerge.
• Immediate destruction of removed plant material, preferably by burning, to prevent re-infestation.
• Targeted chemical application during the brief window of adult emergence, if population thresholds justify the intervention.
