Description

Systematic position: The Duke of Burgundy (Latin: Hamearis lucina) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and is the only representative of the Riodinidae family in Europe. Unlike many agricultural pests that are widespread and generalist, this species is highly specialized and restricted to specific habitats.

Target crops: The primary host plants for the larvae of the Duke of Burgundy are species of the genus Primula, most notably the cowslip (Primula veris) and the oxlip (Primula elatior). Occasionally, they may be found on other species within the primrose family growing in their native habitats.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Hamearis lucina consists of a single generation per year. Adults are typically active from May to June. Females lay their eggs in small clusters on the underside of host plant leaves. The larvae develop throughout the summer months before pupating, overwintering as pupae in leaf litter or near the base of the stems.

Damage and pest status: The larvae feed on the leaves of primroses, creating irregular holes or feeding along the margins of the leaf blade. While localized, heavy feeding can reduce the aesthetic value and vigor of ornamental plants, significant economic damage is rarely observed, as the species is not considered a traditional agricultural pest.

Control measures: In most cases, intensive chemical control is neither necessary nor recommended, as the Duke of Burgundy is a protected species in many parts of its range due to habitat loss. If larvae cause damage in home gardens, non-chemical methods such as hand-picking or the use of biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis are preferred to maintain ecological balance.
