Description
Systematic position of this insect belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Miridae. These are small bugs specialized in feeding on plant sap, primarily from the Cactaceae family, which makes them a serious threat to specialized botanical collections and industrial cactus plantations.
Crops and economic importance. The primary targets are members of the Opuntia genus, as well as other cacti in arid regions of North America. The pest depletes the plant by sucking cell sap from epidermis tissues, leading to necrotic spots, stem discoloration, and general growth inhibition, often resulting in the death of the plant.
Biology and life cycle. The insect's life cycle is closely linked to climatic conditions. Females lay eggs directly into the plant tissues. Larvae pass through several instars while feeding actively, causing the primary damage. The population development depends heavily on temperature and humidity, with the pest potentially producing multiple generations per season in favorable conditions.
Nature of damage. Characteristic whitish or brown spots form at the puncture sites on the epidermis, which can merge over time. These affected areas become entry points for secondary infections, such as fungal and bacterial rots. With high pest density, the plant loses its aesthetic appeal and turgor, acquiring a rusty appearance due to extensive destruction of chlorophyll-bearing tissue.
Protection measures. Management strategies include regular monitoring of plantations for signs of feeding activity. The use of systemic insecticides capable of penetrating plant tissues is recommended. An essential component is agrotechnical control, such as removing severely infested segments (cladodes) and maintaining an optimal irrigation regime to improve the natural immunity of the cactus crops.
