Heteracris leani is a species of grasshopper belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. While typically classified among non-swarming grasshoppers, this species can reach significant population densities under favorable environmental conditions, becoming a serious threat to regional agriculture.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants. Primary victims include cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as various legumes and vegetable crops. The pest is particularly aggressive during hot and dry summer months when the native vegetation dries out, forcing the grasshoppers to invade irrigated fields and managed agricultural lands in search of food.
The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with pods (egg masses) deposited in the soil by females during the previous season. Nymphs emerge in the spring as soil temperatures rise. Throughout their development, nymphs pass through several instar stages, feeding ravenously on green vegetation before maturing into winged adults capable of flying long distances.
The damage caused by Heteracris leani is characterized by severe defoliation. Nymphs and adults feed on leaf blades, stems, and reproductive parts of the plant. Such damage results in reduced photosynthetic activity, stunted growth, and significant losses in harvest yield. If left uncontrolled, the pest can cause total destruction of crops on infested fields.
Effective management requires a strategic approach. Early detection via field scouting is crucial. Agronomic practices include deep plowing of fallow land to disrupt overwintering sites and destroy egg pods. If thresholds of economic damage are exceeded, chemical control with registered insecticides is recommended, ideally targeting the early nymphal stages when the insects are less mobile and concentrated in specific areas.
